My Sweet

You simply don’t know how many nights,
During my frequent insomnia blights,
I lay beside you in some strange fatigue
Finding it relaxing to watch you sleep.
And though it cannot replace the rest I need
It does put me at rest, My Sweet.
And at those times I think
It’s better to hear you breathe
Than to have those wonderful dreams
About cozy places God deemed to be
Sanctuaries made just for me
Because I’ll never wake to the need
That comes from having you not beside me.
And that’s the thought that brings my heart peace
As I slide back between the sheets
And in cupping your breast fall asleep
To have those wonderful dreams
Where I watch you breathe
As you sleep beside me.
